I had a dream last night that someone's granddad in Burbank passed away, leaving behind his matching set of 4 Bertoia chairs. His grandson did not understand the value so he put them up on Craislist, where I happened to find his ad. I immediately got in my car and drove in traffic all the way to Burfuckinbank only to find that the cushions were missing on 2 chairs, the others were terribly stained, and nothing matched.

I woke up relieved.

My fondest childhood memory found its way back to metoday.

I woke up this morning feeling incredibly affectionate forthe dreams I had the night before put me in that state of mind. I can’t explain myself but I really justwanted to feel loved. I do apologize forthis post may seem a touch too vague. It’s like when you go to read your ownpoetry; you get all choked up.

Perhaps it’s the film I passed out to; perhapsit’s the lip staining wine I imbibed.

In any case, my fondest childhood memory found its way backto me today at the most untimely manner.

So here I am, at war and writing down what I can remember.

When I was a child (4 or 5), all I wanted every night was tobe able to sleep in the same room with my mother. Whatever reason may be, I simply felt safe inher presence.

I would bleed overwhelming nightmares without the comfort ofmy mother. These days, that samesituation reigns true without the comfort of another.

My father was never empathetic of this habit. Youneed to learn to be alone. And so Iwould find myself less and less affectionate towards everything andeveryone.

My mother use to work all the time; strike that, she stillworks all the time. Back then the hourswere just a bit more damaging. Iwould sit, droned at home, waiting for her Lincoln to roll up on our drivewayso I could greet her as soon as she stepped foot into our home.

When she did, nothing felt better. I never looked forward to anything the way Ilooked forward to that moment. That single moment of perfection was well worth the wait.

But oneday, it was too much. She came homeafter an unusually long day, exhausted. And I pounced. I jumped on her and wouldn’t let go. I couldn't stop kissingher.

You’re smothering me!

I had no concept of what that meant. No concept of space, distance, or that voidyou anticipate after a long day spent with stale company.

Can I smother you, mom?

This didn’t go over so well. I ran to my room and couldn’t sleep that night for the fear of my thoughts disabled me.

From that day forward, I haven't been able to be that affectionate. Never without doubting myself.

Some days start out better than others; today wasn’t one ofthose days.

No, no, you’re right; it’ll start out like any otherday. Your alarm goes off, you'll hitsnooze. It’ll go off again, but youhaven’t fallen back asleep, you’re just waiting for your thoughts to gather. This shall pass so you'll reach foryour phone to see where you are.

0 missed calls, 3 text messages, and 4 emails. This is where your day starts; disappointing the people you care about the most, and let down by the people youcare the least.

You’ll roll out of bed, feed your cat, and use a heavy handapplying your war paint. Doing so,you’re already slightly too late to get off on a good foot. Doesn’t matter, no one’s really waiting foryou anyway.

This in mind, you'll make your way to the furthest coffee shop,put in your same order (medium redeye) and step outside for a drag. Your barista will mention the perfect weather, butwhat for? You’ll remain cooped up insideall day anyway. And so you'll part withstale librettos and find yourself across the way.

You'll arrive to work and reluctantly open your laptop for youknow as soon as the Wifi kicks in, you’re doomed to answer email afteremail after email. But you'll do it anyway for thesethings accumulate quickly.

And then you'll come across an email your sister sends you…youknow, those ones with the cheesy life lesson quotes at the end, after thesignature. You’ll never understand whyshe attaches these to all her emails, but you’ll read it anyway because it’sthere and an email is not through unless you’ve read every last word. Maybe today you’ll learn something. Most days, these quotes just lower yourserotonin level.

“No day but today!”

-But then again, there’s always tomorrow.

“Today is the first day of the rest of your life!”

-Fuck.

And need I mention her new favorite:

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage tolose sight of the shore.”

This will hit you a touch too hard because your anxiety has been pushingyou towards this direction.

In any case, this is just a quote. So you'll remind yourself of this thought throughout the day and begin signing off with your own personal favorite:

When it comes to relationships, which of the following istrue:

a) A person is not complete withouttheir soul mate, therefore those who aren’t in stable relationships should always continue searching.

b) You cannot be happy in a relationshipuntil you’ve learned to love yourself.

c) Relationships only work if youare always growing. If you’ve learnedall you could from another, it’s time to move on.

d) None of the above.

For most people, it starts out the same way; you fall inlove with the first cute person you meet. With no substance in this relationship, you fight through it becausethey are the best thing that has everhappened to you. So you remind yourselfthis every time things got a touch too difficult. Then you hit that two-year mark in which youdecide whether or not to continue.

This is where I went wrong.

We all knew where it was heading but I kept trying toconvince myself that it’s worth the investment. So I took what I could learn from him and moved on 4 years later. I don’t believe it was waste of time; however,his part may be slightly altered.

For most people, this is the time to “find themselves”; Idefinitely recommend this. You willnever feel more insecure in your life, never more anxious, never morefrightened, and certainly never more alone.

This is where I went wrong.

I immediately fell in love with the next cute guy Imet. Of course, this shall pass whenloyalty is in check. Doesn’t matter, wehad nothing worth fighting for anyway.

For most people, this is the time they do something forthemselves; like travel somewhere, change their major in college, get a drastichaircut, etc.

This is where I went wrong.

I went with the wrong haircut. Never have I felt so unattractive, so inorder to combat this self-destructive tendency, I went out with every singleguy I met just so I wouldn’t have to be alone.

I thought I was happy until I met someone who was goingthrough the exact same state. It’s afrightening thing when you see yourself in someone else.

For most people, this is the time they make the decision towork with this person so they wouldn’t have to face their self-destructivetendencies alone.

This is where I went wrong.

No, no, I did become close with this person, but for a touch toolong. And when put yourself throughthree years of this foggy mess, the umbrage you’ve been harboring for that periodof time will eventually stare you in the face and everything you’ve beenthrough, everything you’ve built, every single thing you cared about willmatter no more.

For most people, this is the time they leave everything theyknow without a farewell, they start over and built new relationships, but mostimportantly, their relationship with themselves. Perhaps find someone special, hope to hell itworks out.

This is where I went wrong.

I’m still here, waiting patiently for something to change,as if everything is out of my control. Still being let down by the people I care about the least, and lettingdown the people I care about the most. When things got too familiar, I tried my best to forget.

For most people, this is the time they take what they havelearned throughout those years and plug in their own theorems, equations, andformulas for now what they know will solve most of their problems.

Fuck.

I’ve arrived a touch too late to show my respect; thishardly matters for I’m the only family who made an appearancenonetheless.

The younger of the two gentlemen asks me to put in a fewwords. For this 42-year-old man I hardlyknow, I had nothing to say. I remainsilent and hoped they understood.

I should’ve said something. I could’ve said anything. Thisbody before me has played an enormous part in my childhood. This heroin addict was the reason why I amthe person I became. Of course I had plentyto say.

“I spent a great deal of my summer slaving over that massivepicture you asked me to paint you and you never hung it up. What was wrong with it? Why did you shove it behind yourbookcase? What should I have done? What does it take to make you happy? ”

But instead, I played my part and remained silent.

I stared blankly as they lowered his casket and put thefinishing touches on erasing my uncle’s existence.

All of which makes me anxious, though there’s nothing morefor me to do. I turn and walkaway.

I can’t help it if I’ve forgotten how to cry.
